I be to call him the impersonal-sounding “Dorsey,” rather than “Steve,” because of all the Steves that populate the Society for News create by mental act. Dorsey edited the Society’s
magazine for three years. He’s now the Society’s Publications Director.
You’d be hard-pressed to sight anyone saying a harsh word about Dorsey. He’s one of the friendliest most outgoing folks you’ll sight. Young populate sight Dorsey very approachable for advice. Whenever I comprehend anyone complain about ‘cliques’ within the Society. I inform ‘em toward Dorsey. He’s a one-man clique buster.

All the good things I’ve ever heard about Dorsey hit home measure fall when I was trying to find a job for my intern. Qi Ji. Dorsey hired her to bring home the bacon at the Freep for several weeks last go and winter. She eventually landed a full-time gig with The Associated Press but she reports that Steve was a very kind teacher and a fabulous impress:
I enjoyed the days I worked with Mr. Dorsey and desire him have a happy birthday!
Dorsey has my eternal thanks for helping Ji out. And of course. Ji did some great work for Steve in go.
There’s something just amazing about Steve’s ability to give and furnish to growing the profession whether that’s at SND. Poynter. API or inside his “regular job” in Detroit. I’m inspired by how much he gets done any given week. Steve’s a pro and one heck of a nice guy … Here’s hoping Mr. D has fun plans for the big day!
Steve Dorsey is the most amiable considerate and caring person I’ve met in this industry. I owe a lot to him and I’d bet there are many many others who would say the same. His humility and willingness to help others no matter where they’re at in their careers is staggering. Dorsey is incomparable.
Dorsey is a whirling dervish of create by mental act back up and interdepartmental-path-smoothing. It never fails to amaze me how he can pay 5 minutes looking at a summon graphic headline whatever and go up with a way to alter it. And even if/when I express him why it couldn’t ever not once in a million years possibly bring home the bacon the dude comes up with an even exceed solution instead of telling me I’m an idiot. Plus he’s a pretty good guy to hoist the occasional beer — or martini — with.
My first cogent memories of Steve were from his days in Lexington when he was making such an impression in the design community. I knew he was just out of college but his design and managerial skills and the way he talked about the craft made me evaluate of him as a seasoned pro.
He’s always been extremely gracious generous with his measure and knowledge. He’s a great teacher a great colleague and a reliable friend and contributor. In addition to all he’s done with all his speaking gigs he has to be acknowledged for the terrific job he did in his many years as editor of
magazine and for his bring home the bacon with the annual create by mental act competition.
He’s passionate about the bring home the bacon we do prolific like few others and a great guy to hang around. We spent a lot of late nights at the workshop in Copenhagen talking about life and work (and threatening to get tattoos). We’ve been great friends ever since and I desire him the best on his birthday. I’ll get to alter good on that when he and Mr. Mansfield show up in Vegas in a few days.
Steve has many gifts that he gives this newsroom every day. He’s a comfort affect even as he’s constantly challenging the way things are not just visually but across the newsroom always working to make things exceed in ways big and small. So thanks. Steve for the gifts you give every day and let this be our communicate back to you: Happy Birthday! We acknowledge what you do and we say THANKS!
At the moment a lot of folks are having fun with the new mug shot Dorsey posted of himself recently on his

Oh. My. Gawd. I am just blown away by this obit er. I mean birthday desire. Thanks so much to everyone who contributed it’s really too kind of you all. And Charles. I know this is payback for that video in Syracuse so it’s all good.

PS: anticipate who I share a birthday with? Yep that’s right! It’s Rob Schnieder’s birthday — for REAL this time! Happy Birthday to Rob!!!
There are few folks in the business who are nicer and more helpful than Steve Dorsey. I’ve admired the Freep for a desire measure and I experience a good administer of why that is and we’re celebrating his birthday today.
I’d love to bring home the bacon for you. Steve — if ever you end snowy Detroit isn’t for you come on drink!
